About Me
Currently, I live in Morris County in New Jersey, but I grew up in New England. I have been photographing places, things, and people since I was 14 years old. I started with my father's Kodak Brownie Hawkeye photographing hurricane damage in my home town and my fellow students at school dances. I even did a little street photography with the old Hawkeye.
I bought my first 35 mm camera after serving in the Submarine Service of the U.S. Navy. My first photographs were black and white, but I did add color. Later, I included medium format cameras in my bag. I used to develop and print my film based photographs, but I now photograph exclusively using Nikon full frame digital cameras. I find it more environmentally sound and I don’t work with toxic chemicals anymore. Now, I print on an Epson Stylus Pro 7880 printer.
To create my web pages, I used Dreamweaver CC as my editor. Critical to the way the pages function is the design of the style sheets and the use of JavaScript to control the pages.
Some of my photographs in these collections reflect some of my travels for business and pleasure. However, many represent my travels to nearby states to simply add to my collections and practice the art of photography.
The East Coast is full of history. The American Revolution and the Civil War were fought here. It is where our country started. By the way, I have ancestors that settled in Pennsylvania before the American Revolution. Three of them fought in the Revolutionary War.
About my Sundays in Central Park collection
Sundays in Central Park started as my semester project for a photography course at the local county college. It was originally a black and white project on film. I liked the concept so much that I decided to make it a new project and include color photographs. The rule is to photograph Central Park only on Sundays. It doesn’t matter what time of year, I just need to be sure it is a Sunday. These photographs are all in digital format because I decided not to digitize the original project. I plan to turn the final collection into a story about Sundays in Central Park.
About my New England collection
As I said earlier, I grew up in New England, so I am drawn to return to visit family and places. I started this collection with a view of Boston from Cambridge. I find night photographs intriguing because there is a certain air of mystery in the dark. I love the history and varied geography of New England. I find New Jersey to likewise have history and varied geography. Though New Jersey’s mountains are somewhat smaller. These photographs are all in digital format.
About my New Jersey collection
In New Jersey, aka the Garden State, we have wolves, gardens, woods, mountains, historical sites, and yes, even factories. A few decades ago, New Jersey was the most populated, most industrialized, and most rural state all at once. Back then, twenty-five cents of every dollar spent on research was spent in New Jersey. I enjoy photographing everything in my adopted state. Including historical sites and wildlife. The wolves are digitized from slides.
About my Pennsylvania collection
The next state west of northern and central New Jersey is Pennsylvania. This is one of the states that is prominent in my family history. I am a descendent of the Crouthamel and Ott lineages. In Pennsylvania, there are covered bridges, railroad museums, rodeos, and historic sites for me to photograph. It is rural, urban, and industrial. The Society Hill photographs are digitized from slides.
About my Flowers and Gardens collection
One of my favorite subjects is flora and fauna. In this collection, I have presented flowers in their domestic environment — in both formal and informal gardens. Flowers delight me and gardens relax me. Who could ask for any thing more?
About my Europe and Israel collection
These are digitized (from slides) photographs from trips to Europe and Israel for business and pleasure.
About my New York collection
These digital photographs are part of my collection of photographic journeys to the nearby state. I covered Central Park and the Bronx Zoo separately because they are great subjects in themselves. The photographs of the Twin Towers and Mid-Town Manhattan were digitized from slides.
About my Bronx Zoo collection
I love visiting and photographing at the Bronx Zoo. One of the most important zoos in the world is the Bronx Zoo. It is the home of the Wildlife Conservation Society — WCS.
From the Wildlife Conservation Society — WCS web pages:
"Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, the WCS was one of the first
conservation organizations in the United States. The Society began with a clear mandate: Advance wildlife conservation, promote the study of zoology, and create a
first-class zoo." In fact there are five in New York City: the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and New York Aquarium.
In 2017, Animal Planet ran a 6 part series titled The Zoo about the WCS. I highly recommend watching it because it really gives you an inside look at both the WCS and zoos.
